Acknowledging and Honoring Personal Values

by

Values are deeply held beliefs which we hold as desirable ideals. Our values are constantly changing and rearranging as we go through the different stages of our life. For this reason, it is important that we review them regularly to ensure that our current goals and purpose reflect the values that are most important to us at any given time.

Being clear on our core values ensures that we maintain a meaningful balance in all areas of our life. When there is imbalance between our goals and our values, lack of motivation may result. The only cure for this is to redefine the goal in terms of our values.

Our values also define that person we wish to become. If we do not understand and acknowledge our underlying values, the changes we attempt in life may lead to disappointment and confusion.

The following list of values will help you decide what is really important in your life. The list is a compilation of many lists found online and in books. However, this does not mean that it is complete. There may be values that you hold which have not been included. Use this list as a guideline, and determine which ten values are most important to you.

When reviewing the list of values you may find that there are some which you consider to be negative. Please accept that to someone else these values may be important. No two people will see life in exactly the same way. Please remember: Everyone has an inalienable right to their own values and beliefs.

After creating your list of ten most important values, try to put the list in order of importance. This list can be used to determine if your goals are in balance with your ideals.

Those values listed below in colour represent categories in our Affirmations Directory. Clicking on these words will take you to the appropriate affirmations page. For affirming values in more general terms, please see Values Affirmations.
