Power Up!

by

What we think automatically affects how we feel. When we dwell on those things in life that drain us - negative people, boring work, mounting bills - we not only spend an immense amount of mental energy, we also feel it physically. We drain our bodies.

Negative thoughts are depleting and disempowering. Positive thoughts are just the opposite. So why not choose to spend our mental energy on thoughts that empower our bodies as well?

Whenever you are feeling drained, ask yourself this question - "What am I thinking right now?" Chances are it will be something negative. The good news is, you can change your thoughts whenever you want. It really is that simple.

And no, changing your thoughts from negative to positive is not ignoring the original problem. It's putting you in a place of control, where you can rationally decide whether it's better to deal with the problem positively, or just let it go. Shifting to a positive viewpoint actually empowers you!

Try it now! Focus your attention on something positive - something that you really enjoy. Visualize being there. Feel the positive emotions that this generates. Stay there for a moment. Now check your energy level. Better?
Nothing erases unpleasant more effectively than conscious concentration on pleasant ones.

Hans Selye

You can test this in reverse.

Focus on something that always brings you down. Imagine being there right now. Can't you just feel the energy being drained from your body?

The secret to having endless energy is simply this: Focus your mind on positive, energizing thoughts, and revive your body's energy through regular exercise. Put the two together on a daily basis, and you can power up your energy levels anytime you like. Just switch your focus to something positive!

Don't Treat Yourself Like Scrap Metal!

Make your life a priority

by

"On my street every Sunday morning I see all these people washing their cars. They spend up to an hour doing it. I feel like saying to them, "Didn't you ever hear about having a sense of priority?" The cars look great. Their owners look, flabby, miserable, tired, red-eyed and hung over. The same people who take care to put the right oil and petrol into a vehicle and have it serviced regularly, treat themselves like scrap metal. They eat junk food, they don't exercise and their idea of fun is watching rubbish on TV. Why treat your car better than you treat yourself."   - Pete Cohen

I have witnessed this myself. My brother is a perfect example. His vehicles get way more attention than he gives himself. He lives on Coke, thinks playing golf twice a month is exercise, and eats red meat as often as he can. The only thing that gets more attention than his car are his children. And they get only the best of everything. Sad but true.
My husband loves to cycle. So he does get his exercise, no question. But he definitely spends more time playing with his bike than he does worrying about his diet. He eats what I cook, of course, and that's healthy food. But if I try to explain to him why this food is good for you and another is not, he's just not interested. When it comes to breakfast and lunch (which he prepares himself) he eats what he likes best. Catching the latest soccer match is much more important than worrying about whether his lunch is healthy.
Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.

Buddha

I think that it is a shame that so many people spend more time and money on the newest technology, the latest fashions, their vehicles - even their pets - than they do on themselves. Some use the excuse that eating healthy costs money. But add up the beer, wine, junk food, cigarettes (not to mention the mobile phone contracts, cable TV, and restaurant tabs) and this hardly holds water.

It's all about priorities. What's more important: your health or keeping up with the Jones', Your physical well-being or your mental entertainment. It's your life of course, and you are free to live it as you please. But never use the excuse that you don't have the time or money to improve your health. If you are unfit, you have chosen to be that way.

Do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor. Choose life, not lifestyle.

Is Your Self-Talk Making You Sick?

Negative thoughts are unhealthy thoughts

by

Every thought and emotion you experience causes a chemical reaction in your bloodstream, immune system, organs... basically in your entire body.

Every stressful situation which you willingly allow to affect your thinking, immediately starts to undermine your health. Every negative thought, belief, or emotion you entertain is capable of creating disease in your body - right down to the cellular level.

Every single cell in your body is affected by every single though that you have.

Jack Canfield

I know many people believe that stress comes from outside circumstances. And it is true that the initial trigger for stress may indeed start this way. But it is ALWAYS our reaction to this trigger that causes our stress. Our thoughts and beliefs create our emotional reactions. And our emotional reactions negatively affect our body, creating a vicious feedback loop that will not stop until we stop giving it our attention.

There’s no stress in the world, only people thinking stressful thoughts.

Dr Wayne Dyer

Negative thoughts, negative self-talk, negative beliefs... these are all things within our control to change. Do you really want to think yourself sick?

"If we were to tell you to deliberately spend ten minutes every day envisaging yourself being very ill, you'd quite rightly refuse to do it. Most people know that's a bad idea; yet those same people may spend time every day worrying about their health."
- Pete Cohen

For for sake of your health, be vigilant about the thoughts you choose to entertain. Do your body a favor and THINK POSITIVE!

Unable to lose weight in spite of your best efforts?

by

You work out faithfully 3 times a week. You get up early just to fit in some daily aerobics. And you carefully watch what you eat. And yet, those extra pounds just won't go away. In fact, you weigh the same or more than when you started. What gives?

Well for one, our metabolism slows as we get older. In other words, it takes more effort and vigilance just to keep a constant weight. Add the sedentary nature of many jobs, and we have the perfect recipe for weight gain and energy drain.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then, your body and your fat are really good friends.

Unknown

But science has a logical explanation for all this. For starters, human beings were never designed to sit most of the day. In fact, genetically and physiologically we are 99.9% the same as our caveman ancestors who spent from dawn to dust in a physical battle for survival. To put it simply, the human body needs to move regularly throughout the day or suffer the consequences of impaired metabolism.

The only way to combat this is to ensure that we do something reasonably physical for a few minutes every half-hour to an hour. What you are trying to do is flip the switch on your metabolism so it functions optimally - burning excess fat instead of laying it down. By engaging in short bursts of physical activity every 30 to 60 minutes, you are programming your body to sustain a consistently high metabolic rate.

And losing those few extra pounds won't be the only benefit you'll realize by moving your body throughout the day. You can also look forward to:
  • more energy and stamina all day long
  • better lymph circulation, leading to an improved immune system
  • enhanced concentration and mental acuity
  • improved ability to handle stress
  • increased endorphin levels to improve your mood
  • a better night's sleep
Our new Life Tips app is only on the drawing boards, but when it's done there is one option I promise to build in... a get-up-and-move reminder. Until then, set your watch, timer, or mobile phone to send you an hourly reminder to get up and get moving!

To discover other clever ways to boost your metabolism, increase your energy, and shed the extra pounds, I highly recommend Dr. Robert K. Cooper's excellent book, Flip the Switch.
