Unable to lose weight in spite of your best efforts?
by Che Garman
You work out faithfully 3 times a week. You get up early just to fit in some daily aerobics. And you carefully watch what you eat. And yet, those extra pounds just won't go away. In fact, you weigh the same or more than when you started. What gives?
Well for one, our metabolism slows as we get older. In other words, it takes more effort and vigilance just to keep a constant weight. Add the sedentary nature of many jobs, and we have the perfect recipe for weight gain and energy drain.

But science has a logical explanation for all this. For starters, human beings were never designed to sit most of the day. In fact, genetically and physiologically we are 99.9% the same as our caveman ancestors who spent from dawn to dust in a physical battle for survival. To put it simply, the human body needs to move regularly throughout the day or suffer the consequences of impaired metabolism.
The only way to combat this is to ensure that we do something reasonably physical for a few minutes every half-hour to an hour. What you are trying to do is flip the switch on your metabolism so it functions optimally - burning excess fat instead of laying it down. By engaging in short bursts of physical activity every 30 to 60 minutes, you are programming your body to sustain a consistently high metabolic rate.
And losing those few extra pounds won't be the only benefit you'll realize by moving your body throughout the day. You can also look forward to:
- more energy and stamina all day long
- better lymph circulation, leading to an improved immune system
- enhanced concentration and mental acuity
- improved ability to handle stress
- increased endorphin levels to improve your mood
- a better night's sleep
To discover other clever ways to boost your metabolism, increase your energy, and shed the extra pounds, I highly recommend Dr. Robert K. Cooper's excellent book, Flip the Switch.
